Pets and Air Travel

Posted on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 9:11 am

Do you have to travel by air in the near future? If you do, are you a pet owner who needs to bring your pet along with you? Although most of us leave our pets at home, you may not want to do so or your purpose for travel may be to move, as opposed to taking a fun filled vacation. Regardless of your reasons for wanting or needing to travel with your pet or pets, there are a number of important points that you will need to keep in mind.

The first step in traveling with a pet is to make sure that you can do so. Although a good number of airlines will allow pets on their planes, not all will. You may be in a predicament if you plan to depart from a small airport with only one or two airlines. If they do not accept pets or if their rules and restrictions are too much for you to handle, you will want to examine other nearby airports, especially those that are larger in size.

When traveling by air with your pet or pets, it is important to remember that you will be charged an additional fee. Unfortunately, many first time pet travelers believe that they can use their pets and their pet carriers to count towards as a carry-on bag or a checked bag. This isn’t how it works though. You will, almost always, be charged an extra fee for traveling with a pet. This extra fee will likely depend on the airline in question and well as your pet’s location, such as in the cabin or in the baggage compartment.

That leads to another important point. Even with some of the airlines that allow pets, like cats and dogs, aboard their flights, not all allow pets to be in the cabin with other passengers. This is particularly common on small planes where allergies may be a big concern. If you cannot part with your pet, be sure to search for an airline that will allow you to keep him or her in the cabin with you. With that said, remember that the size of your pet will also play a huge factor in your options.

Regardless of where your pet is stored for the plane ride, you will need to have a pet carrier or crate for them. Many airlines have specific rules and restrictions on what type can be used. Resections often include materials used, as well as size. Most will provide you with that information when asked. Speaking of pet crates and carriers, it is important to make sure that you give your pet enough room to stand and move around a little bit. In fact, most airlines will refuse to transport pets that they feel are unsafe from small pet crates and carriers.

It is also important to make sure that you get your pet checked by their vet. You will want to make sure that your pet has all required vaccinations and that they are fit for travel. Also, all airlines require that you receive a health certificate, which will state that your pet is healthy and safe for travel.

The above mentioned points are just a few of the many that you will want to take into consideration when traveling with a pet. Added tips include booking direct flights, making sure your pet’s collar is marked with the proper identification, as well as their pet carrier.

My Kuala Lumpur trip during October #3

Posted on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 11:29 am

This is a video taken during my Malaysia KL trip. Theres a mini theme park in the Times square shopping mall (10 storeys high !) itself and this one of the roller coaster ride that goes around the building!

I didn’t have the guts to ride on it, afraid that my food will spilled all over after the 360 turn !!!

This is a night shot taken on the Pavilion at Bukit Bintang, which is considered the one of the largest shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur.

These were just 2 cute little piggy buns I had in one of the Chinese restaurant at the basement of Pavilion. Aren’t they lovable? Anyway I ate them in 3 bites.

These are some of the pictures for my Kuala Lumpur trip in October. I was there for a training conference called Hack in the Box, but the Main Focus was the eating, shopping, and eating…

Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers.

A picture of the buffet breakfast I had during my 4 day hotel stay - Crowne Plaza Hotel Kuala Lumpur. This hotel is situated beside KLCC, about a 5 minutes walk. It is also a 5 minutes walk to the nearby Pavilion shopping mall. Their breakfast is nice and there’s alot of variety too.

Theres also a monorail just directly in front of the Hotel, and it took us 4 stations to reach China town.
Things were quite expensive around the region of KLCC twin towers, and Bukit Bintang - The Pavilion. My shopping actually starts right at China town. I bought a lot of nice T-shirts, about 15-30 rm each.

Theres also Times Square, a 10 storey shopping mall with a mini Theme Park inside the mall. This is a 2 station ride from our hotel.

Attending HITB in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

My company is sending me over to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I will be attending “Hack In The Box 2008″. Hack in the box is an annual event that conducts training and conference about stuff like hacking and security of Information Technology and the like.

I will be there from 26 to 29 October, so I would be away for awhile, staying in Hotel where the event is run.

This is the Hotel, Crown Plaza Mutiara Hotel, KL: http://www.crowneplazakl.com/cpkl/map-location.html

From the Hotel, it is a 5 minutes walk to the Convention Centre and a 15 minutes walk to KL’s landmark, the twin towers.

This is yet another chance to put in more travel series in my blog, with more photos, videos and interesting places like food (My package includes a breakfast buffet!) That’s also part of the reason why I bought the F40d camera.

Meanwhile I will have to prepare for this trip, with laptops luggages, and some of the travel necessities. Just hope it won’t rain. Anyone has recommendations in KL ?

Some Videos taken during Hong Kong trip

Posted on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 8:59 am

Ok I actually dug up some videos that I’ve missed out when I scanned through some of the photos. Some photos taken were really bad, videos were bad too. But I’ve gotten these 2 videos which are both funny and entertaining.

This was taken while we were waiting at Prudential Hotel. My friend wore a shirt that he’d has bought, so its un washed, with some hair sticking on it.

The other day I was at the SOGO shopping center in Causeway (Can’t remember… hmm). The basement were packed with female shoppers because that was the last day of Thankyou Day or something like that.

Last post for HK Trip

Posted on Monday, September 15, 2008 at 4:09 pm

This is my last post with some pictures of this and that.

I think we had a Tim Sum Lunch at one of the restaurants, and also went to Causeway Bay for dessert. It was quite strange when we were at Causeway Bay because there were not many public toilets in the shopping malls. So in order to sit down to rest our feet and get a toilet break, we went to have dessert. I took a picture of the MTR as well, because there were many many people.

Before reaching Causeway Bay, we travelled on the MTR, and needed to changed our trip. I was shock because I haven’t seen this in my own train transport system, with so many heads. As I was tall enough, I could get a view… and then I snapped a picture of it.

This is where causeway bay is on google map, with many shopping malls around. I wish I had more time to shop there!

This is the dessert I am talking about. Not bad for the shop’s ambience and a 30 minutes break, which cost around 20.00HKD or $5.00 USD. And remember, all bills and prices in Hong Kong don’t tax on people and consumers, so you pay what you see.

This was the other day where we had lunch at this Tim Sum restaurant. In the middle, it is a dish called Yuan Yang Fried Rice, which symbolises the black and white Yin Yang. It’s kinda of wierd because it’s half sweet and half salty. Before snapping the picture my friend atually ate 2 of the ‘Har Kao’ (Shrimps wrap in flour skin). A nice place to relax and enjoy your meal!

That’s all for the Hong Kong trip. Click the links on the right sidebar column for more of my Hong Kong travel series!

Shopping in Kong Kong during May 08

Posted on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at 8:01 am

After we “touch down” with the cable car, we went for Food and Shopping ! We bought a few clothes and had a late lunch, or was that an early dinner?

Anyway, just as we were shopping we took some pictures of “Nu Ren Jia” ladies street in English. Here are some of the pictures:

And here:

That street is actually a road with stalls and tents setup for you to shop for a very wide varierty of stuff. Well, that street is mainly for tourists, so beware ! In fact, that street is opened only around 7pm - midnight. Which means in the day time, you won’t get to visit it, and by 630, you’ll see alot of people “building” tents manually. And then they take the tents down.

To get there, alight at Mong Kok station, or “Wang Jiao” in Mandarin.

This will be the last series of my travel. Hope to travel to Australia in my next trip.

Trip to LanTau Island (Da Yu Shan)

Posted on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 9:51 pm

My last visit for the half day tour was to go up LanTau Island (Da Yu Shan)

To visit this island, we need to take a ferry. The boat routes around the island, travelling pass the airport. They say during this route, you could see Dolphins, especially pinks ones, jumping around. But due to the stormy weather we did not see any of it
:(

No Dolphins… O and thats the cable cars

At last we arrive here, board a bus, and went up the long winding hill, to visit the great Buddha. This one of the motivation why asians, or in particular Buddhist religions come here, to pray for peace and safety, and to take a look at the majestic statue of the Buddha.

What a big Incense pot!

Hong Kong Tai O Images

Before the climb, we had a vegetarian meal that was delicious and healthy. This is a special meal that is provided to every visitor. And then, they say you should exercise after eating… So I went up the steps!

And finally I reach the top ! Great view here.

A closer view of the Buddha statue. This is at least ten storeys high.

After this climb, we walk pass some visitor’s shopping area, and we travelled down to mainland by cable car. Actually there’s a shortcut up. That is to take the cable car up, and it should take us less than 10 minutes. Whereas we took the long way up, at the pier, the ferry route, the bus route. Well it’s worth.

This is the map. We started from top right, travelled to Tai O at the bottom left. Board a bus form there and went to the center of the island.

Back from the cable car, we had our own shopping spree at the Factory outlet at Tung Chung MTR station. Nice shopping mall for spending tourists like me! Big brands at cheap prices…

Hong Kong Wong Tai Sin temple visit

Posted on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 2:55 am

The second place the tour guide brought us to was Wong Tai Sin temple. I am sure this is a tourist attraction because there were many tourists just like us. Before we arrived here, we actually drove past the Kowloon park, with the guide explaining the history how Kowloon (it means nine dragons in chinese) came about, and the Old Hong Kong International Airport.

If you stood at the Kowloon walled city park and look around you, you’ll see eight hills that stradegically forms a buildup area around the park, and the ninth dragon, was the king himself. (You probably should google more if you are interested.)

For a few moments I was disappointed after see the Old Hong Kong International Airport with just an empty piece of land. I was looking forward because I used to see Hong Kong films with planes flying across rooftops very closely to the housing areas and CBD. Now this is all history.

This is one of the pictures I took outside the temple. I didn’t really went in, because there were alot of burning incense with a thick smoke. Furthermore it was about to rain. So I remained outside.

Lets look at some of the interesting pictures here.

This is Wong Tai Sin’s temple. I suppose it is a taoist temple. To reach here, you can take the MTR to Wong Tai Sin station, which is quite convinient.

This is where it stands on the google map.

This is where the kowloon walled city park stands on the google map. You have to be physically there to see the 8 “dragons”.

You could see at the lower right hand corner of the map, where the old Hong Kong International Airport. It is now an empty land for futher developments, like Casinos and entertainment areas =)
